After the great success of the 5 oz Big Five Lion coin in 2016, we are proud to announce the coming release of the amazing high relief coin as a 1 kilo version!
This is an appropriate presentation of the "king of the jungle" with its voluminous mane and its majestic appearance.
Appearing in cultures across Europe, Asia, and Africa, the lion has been an icon for humanity for thousands of years.
In some cultures, the lion symbolizes power and royalty: Being compared to a lion was considered to be one of the greatest compliments.
In 1875 the engraver Maarten Mauquoy opened an engraving workshop in Belgium. The seal “Handmade in Belgium” bears witness to the high quality of Mauquoy.

It impresses the viewer with its breathtaking high relief and sensational 3D effect.
The leopard is an excellent hunter capable of reaching a speed of 58 kilometers per hour. Its habitat extends from the rainforest to the steppe.

1 kilo coin of the Big Five Rhino
Beni Debacker’s spectacular portrait of a rhino graces this giant coin made of 1 kilo pure silver.
The expressiveness and the three-dimensional depth of the minting are peerless. It even manages to give the impression that the rhino’s horn protrudes from the coin.
Unfortunately, three of the five existing rhinoceros species are critically endangered. According to WWF,
only few rhinos are able to survive outside of national parks or reserves, due to continued poaching and habitat loss throughout many decades.

The Water Buffalo completes our highly successful Big Five Africa 1kg Edition.
It also marks the final issue being coined by the Mauqouy Mint.
The conclusive depiction of a water buffalo is a dignified motif to end one of the most successful coin series in our company´s history.

Information about the artist:
Beni Debacker - Royal Portraits
The belgian artist was born in 1970 and studied scuplting at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles.
Since 2004 he has been a self-employed sculptor, restaurateur, and medallion maker.
He worked with the Mauquoy studio to create the official medallion for the royal palace of Belgium, which displayed the portraits of king Philippe and queen Mathilde for their coronation ceremonies in 2013.
