Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese sailor who sailed in the name of the Spanish crown. Magellan probably found a secret map in the Portuguese maritime archives, whereupon he began to plan his voyage around the world. On August 10, 1519, the voyage around the world began in Seville. But Magellan was killed on 27 April 1521 in Mactan in the Philippines during the journey. On 6 September 1522 one ship reached Sanlúcar, the Spanish port of departure. The first circumnavigation of the world was completed and lasted two years, eleven months and two weeks.
